Objectives - Participants will be able to:

Critical Reading

  • Use guidelines to become critical readers

  • Use critical reading skills to help in the problem-solving process

Reading for Information

  • Identify some key reading strategies for building reading comprehension

  • Identify the main idea in a text

  • Identify context clues, such as prefixes and suffixes that will aid in comprehension

Reading on the Job

  • Understand the purpose of an employee handbook and policy manual

  • Use a table of contents and an index to find answers more efficiently

  • Find the main idea more quickly

  • Transfer procedures from a paragraph to a step-by-step process

Reading to Check Information

  • Recognize masked messages in job-related documents

  • Make comparisons between documents using a five-step process

  • Check their work against workplace standards

  • Look for cause-and-effect situations in their job

Reading to Follow Directions

  • Simplify written directions into small, more manageable pieces

  • Use more effective measures to read memos, letters and other key documentation specific to job performance

  • Define their purpose when reading directions to follow them more effectively
