Skill:  Spelling Rules

Activity:  Instruct participants to keep a journal of words they commonly misspell and write the spelling rule next to the word.

Skill:  Punctuation

Activity:  Provide newspaper articles for participants to read and identify where and how quotation marks are used.

Activity:  "Cut up" a sentence into pieces on index cards.  Each card should have either a word from the sentence or a punctuation mark.  Randomly assign each participant a card.  If there are not enough cards, remaining participants can be "helpers."  Instruct the class to make a complete sentence with correct punctuation.  The class should line up at the front of the room in what they think is the correct order.

Skill:  Parts of speech

Activity:  Instruct participants to write down directions on how to get to their school cafeteria.  They should underline all the prepositions in the sentence.
