Adult Education/Vocational Rehabilitation Partnership

Back to Statewide Initiatives

This partnership, established in 2003, has proven successful in providing vocational rehabilitation programs the ability to offer adult education instruction “on site” to their disabled clients who are engaged in pre-employment training activities.  Through the partnership, adult education has expanded its scope of providing educational opportunities to a diverse population who are most in need of services.

Adult education classes are held in each of the twenty-three vocational rehabilitation centers in South Carolina.  Adult education offers to these centers a “prescriptive package” of instructional opportunities consisting of:  Pre-GED and/or GED classes, Introduction to Computers, Reading/Math, Health Literacy, Financial Literacy and Pre-employment Readiness.

Beginning in the fall of 2005, the VR Partnership has added a pilot program that enables four centers to take part in adult education’s Career Readiness Certificate program using WorkKeys. VR clients successfully completing this course of instruction can gain an adult education credential that documents their employability skill levels in Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Locating Information as verified by ACT’s  WorkKeys System.
